Service - Contract-to-Hire Evaluation

Evaluate engineers before converting them

Bring an engineer on under a structured 3 to 6 month contract with defined conversion criteria. You confirm technical and team fit on real project work before committing to a permanent hire.

The client problem

Why this workforce gap exists

Permanent engineering hires carry significant organizational risk. Cultural fit, technical depth under real project pressure, and long-term alignment with your systems are difficult, sometimes impossible, to assess from interviews alone.

Budget uncertainty compounds this: many organizations need OpEx flexibility while a project's scope firms up, but still want CapEx optionality to convert the role to a permanent seat once the need is confirmed.

A mis-hire on a critical engineering role is expensive well beyond severance - it costs schedule, team morale, and the sunk cost of a repeated search. Contract-to-hire exists to move that risk to before the commitment, not after.

The Gridline solution

Contract-to-Hire explained

Contract-to-hire starts an engineer on the same terms as a standard contract placement, on our payroll, working under your direction, but with a conversion point built into the agreement from day one. Both sides know upfront what the trial period looks like and what triggers the move to your permanent payroll.

This model exists because technical interviews and reference checks only tell you so much about how an engineer performs on your systems, with your team, under your project pressures. A contract-to-hire period lets you evaluate actual output, communication, and problem-solving on live work before making a permanent commitment.

Every candidate is put through The Grid Method™ before submission, so the trial period is evaluating fit and team chemistry, not compensating for a weak initial screen. Conversion terms, including timing and any associated fee, are agreed before the engagement starts, so there's no renegotiation once you decide to hire.

If fit isn't there, the contract ends cleanly at term without a termination process on your books, and we can resume the search against the same role definition immediately.

  • Confirm fit before extending a permanent offer
  • Reduce mis-hire risk on critical engineering roles
  • Conversion terms agreed upfront, no renegotiation later
  • Compensation aligned for both contract and permanent scenarios before the engagement begins

How we solve it

What the engagement delivers

  • Structured evaluation window

A typical 3 to 6 month contract period with defined conversion criteria agreed before the engineer starts.

  • Evaluated for contract and permanent fit from day one

Candidates are screened for both immediate contract performance and long-term permanent alignment, not just short-term task fit.

  • Compensation aligned upfront

Contract and permanent compensation are aligned before the engagement begins, removing renegotiation friction at conversion.

  • We manage the transition

Paperwork, offer structure, and retention support through conversion are handled so the changeover is administratively clean.

Fit assessment

Ideal use cases for this model

Use this as a decision aid before you commit a requisition to a delivery model.

  • You want to validate fit before a permanent offer
  • The role is business-critical and a mis-hire is costly
  • You're hiring for a team or culture that's hard to assess in interviews alone
  • You want budget flexibility during an initial evaluation period
  • Budget uncertainty requires OpEx flexibility with CapEx optionality
  • You're testing a new discipline or specialty on your team for the first time

Why it works

Advantages of this engagement model

  • Lower hiring risk

You see actual on-the-job performance before committing to permanent employment terms.

  • Defined conversion path

Conversion timing and terms are set at the start of the engagement, removing negotiation friction later.

  • No disruption if it doesn't work out

If the engineer isn't the right fit, the contract concludes at term with no reduction-in-force process required.

  • Faster ramp than a cold direct hire

Engineers are already productive on your project by the time conversion happens, shortening onboarding after hire.

Delivery

How the engagement runs

Conversion criteria are set during Role Qualification and re-validated in Post-Placement Success - two of The Grid Method™'s 14 stages.

  1. Role and fit criteria

    Day 1

We define the technical requirements and the team-fit signals you'll evaluate during the trial.

  2. Candidate sourcing

    Days 2–7

Engineers are screened for both technical skill and long-term team alignment, not just short-term task fit.

  3. Trial placement

    Weeks 1–4

The engineer joins your project under contract terms while you assess performance directly.

  4. Fit review

    Midpoint of trial

We check in with you and the engineer to confirm expectations are aligned before conversion.

  5. Conversion or close-out

    End of trial

You convert the engineer to direct employment under the agreed terms, or the contract concludes cleanly.
