Hiring Water and Wastewater Process Engineers
Water process engineering is a design job with a permit attached, and the permit is what separates the shortlist.
· 7 min read · Hiring Guides
Water and wastewater programs sit at the intersection of process design, civil works and regulatory compliance. The process engineer is the role that carries all three, which is why generic chemical engineering backgrounds often do not transfer cleanly into the sector without significant ramp.
Specify the treatment train in the requisition
"Water process engineer" tells a recruiter nothing about whether you need membrane experience, biological nutrient removal, sludge handling, or advanced oxidation. Naming the treatment train, the design flow, and the regulatory driver turns a vague requisition into a searchable one and roughly halves shortlist rejection.
| Focus | Ask for | Common gap |
|---|---|---|
| Membrane and desalination | Plants designed, flux and fouling assumptions defended | Pilot-only experience presented as full-scale |
| Biological treatment | Nutrient removal performance under permit | Design without operational feedback |
| Sludge and biosolids | Dewatering and digestion projects delivered | Paper studies rather than built works |
| Industrial pretreatment | Discharge consents achieved, client sector | Municipal-only background |
Screen for regulatory defence, not just calculation
- Which permits or consents their design had to satisfy, and who the regulator was
- A time the plant did not meet its design performance and what they changed
- How they handled operator input during commissioning and handover
- Whether they have stood behind a design in front of a client's operations team
Sequence with the civil program
Process design leads civil design, and civil construction leads process commissioning by a long margin. Process engineering headcount therefore peaks early and again late, with a trough in between that is often mismanaged by releasing the design team entirely.
Summary
Key takeaways
- Name the treatment train, design flow and regulatory driver in the requisition
- Regulatory defence and operational feedback are the differentiating evidence, not calculation alone
- Design and commissioning process engineers are distinct hires
- Process headcount is double-peaked; do not release the whole design team in the trough
