Controls Engineering · Role - SCADA Engineers

SCADA Engineers Behind Remote Monitoring and Historians

SCADA engineers build the supervisory layer that gives operators visibility and control across distributed assets. A poor hire here creates blind spots operators discover during an outage.

Role overview

What scada engineers do

SCADA engineers design and configure the supervisory control layer that aggregates data from PLCs and RTUs across a site or a distributed network of assets like substations or pump stations. Their work covers tag configuration, alarm management, historian integration, and communication protocols across sometimes unreliable networks. Unlike PLC engineers focused on device-level logic, SCADA engineers focus on visibility, alarming, and supervisory control across many sites at once.

This role is hard to hire because SCADA platforms vary widely (Ignition, Wonderware, GE iFIX, OSIsoft PI) and utility SCADA differs meaningfully from industrial plant SCADA in protocol and compliance requirements. A candidate strong in factory SCADA may not know DNP3 or NERC CIP requirements common in utility environments.

Scope of work

Core responsibilities

We screen against these responsibilities directly rather than against job-title history.

  • Configure SCADA tags, graphics, and alarm thresholds
  • Integrate historian systems for trending and reporting
  • Support communication protocol setup across RTUs and PLCs
  • Manage alarm rationalization to reduce operator alarm fatigue
  • Support NERC CIP or similar compliance documentation for utility systems
  • Troubleshoot communication failures across distributed sites

Grid Method™ screening

What we specifically screen for in this discipline

Historian and alarm rationalization depth - We probe how a candidate has structured tag naming, historian retention, and alarm rationalization on a live system, not just SCADA software familiarity.

Deployment

Projects this role supports

  • Substation SCADA integration
  • Pipeline or pump station monitoring builds
  • Plant-wide historian deployment
  • Alarm rationalization projects
  • SCADA platform migrations

Market reality

Why this role is hard to fill

  • Utility SCADA differs from industrial SCADA

Protocol requirements and compliance obligations like NERC CIP mean experience does not transfer cleanly across sectors.

  • Platform fragmentation limits pool size

Ignition, Wonderware, and iFIX each have distinct skill communities, narrowing candidates for less common platforms.

  • Alarm management expertise is often missing

Many candidates can configure tags but have never actually rationalized an alarm system to reduce nuisance alarms.

Our method

How we recruit scada engineers

  1. Confirm platform and sector

    Day 1

We identify SCADA platform and whether the environment is utility or industrial before sourcing.

  2. Technical screen

Candidates describe a historian integration or alarm rationalization project they led.

  3. Compliance check

For utility roles, we confirm familiarity with relevant compliance frameworks.

  4. Shortlist delivery

    Days 5–10

Candidates arrive matched to your platform and sector requirements.
