Automation Engineering · Role - Automation Engineers
Automation Engineers and Production Line Throughput
Automation engineers integrate robotics, machine vision, and control systems into full production cells. A weak hire slows commissioning and leaves throughput targets unmet.
Role overview
What automation engineers do
Automation engineers design and integrate the equipment that turns a manual or semi-manual process into an automated one, combining robotics, machine vision, conveyance, and control systems into a working cell. Their work spans mechanical layout, controls integration, and vendor coordination for robot arms, vision systems, and end effectors. This role sits above pure PLC programming because it requires designing how mechanical, electrical, and software systems work together as one system.
Hiring is difficult because true integration experience, not just component-level programming, is uncommon. Many candidates have programmed a single robot or PLC but have never owned the full cell design, from mechanical interference checks to throughput validation. We screen for end-to-end integration ownership specifically.
Scope of work
Core responsibilities
We screen against these responsibilities directly rather than against job-title history.
- Design and integrate robotic work cells and automated production lines
- Specify and configure machine vision systems for inspection or guidance
- Coordinate with equipment vendors on integration timelines
- Validate cell throughput against production targets during commissioning
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and software issues across the cell
- Support safety system integration around automated equipment
Screening criteria
Skills and credentials we verify
Technical skills
- Robot programming (FANUC, ABB, KUKA)
- Machine vision (Cognex, Keyence)
- Studio 5000
- Mechanical layout review
- Throughput and cycle time analysis
- Safety PLC integration
- Industrial networking
- Vendor FAT coordination
Certifications and licensing
- Vendor robot certifications
- ISA CCST
- OSHA 30
- Functional safety training (TÜV or equivalent)
Grid Method™ screening
What we specifically screen for in this discipline
End-to-end cell ownership - We confirm a candidate owned a cell from layout through throughput validation, since isolated robot programming experience does not transfer directly to integration accountability.
Deployment
Projects this role supports
- Robotic assembly cell integration
- Machine vision inspection deployment
- Conveyance and material handling automation
- Line throughput optimization projects
- Legacy line automation retrofits
Market reality
Why this role is hard to fill
Component skill does not equal integration skill
Many candidates can program a robot in isolation but have never owned a full cell from layout through throughput validation.
Vendor-specific robot experience narrows the field
FANUC, ABB, and KUKA each have distinct programming environments, and deep cross-brand experience is uncommon.
Throughput accountability is rarely tested in interviews
We probe whether candidates were actually held to cycle time targets or only responsible for getting equipment running.
Our method
How we recruit automation engineers
Define integration scope
Day 1
We confirm robot brand, vision system, and throughput targets before sourcing.
Technical screen
Candidates describe a cell they integrated end to end, including throughput results.
Reference verification
We confirm ownership scope and outcomes with former project managers.
Shortlist delivery
Days 5–10
Candidates arrive matched to your robot platform and cell complexity.
